My sister spent 2 years in Kenya as a Peace Corps volunteer. I believe she was there a few years before 2005 when these "cracks" started happening.

It was a landscape of weirdly colored green pools of water surrounded by orange and sulfurous yellow rocks and salt pans. It's a sight unlike anything I'd ever seen before or since.
