The more mushrooms are featured the further back you go. Cathedral building came about immediately after the rapture didn't happen at the turn of the second millenium as a sort of peace movement against the crusades. The Eleventh century had a brief period of hedonism before the church pushed back. First cathedral was started in southern France in 1007, it featured what we might call psychadelic like art.
