Hello DUers. Hoping for some advice on my upcoming road trip in October.
Planning on doing a redwoods trip, first Sequoia/Kings to Yosemite/Calavares.
Going north up the 5 to Yreka, then west, then coming south along coast, back home to San Diego.
Question: is the 48 (Indian Creek Rd) between Happy Camp and Oregon border a good road for an Outback?
Thank you for any help or suggestions

(69 posts)Used to live in Crescent City, Hwy 48 is usually called Grayback Road. Goes between Happy Camp and O'Brien. Road is fine and scenic. Gives access to Red Buttes wilderness. Any car should be able to drive it.

(696 posts)That being said, I've been on 96 (which you'll be on for a while after leaving Yreka and eventually ties into 299), 299 at Redding and 36 at Red Bluff, which both leave 5 and go west and east. Currently 36 west is closed because of land slide but has routing around. Thirty six is major pot country, northern part of the Emerald Triangle. 299 is by far the best and quickest route (which i believe your trying to stay away from).
If it's any help, I just moved to a small hamlet half way between 299 and Yreka on hwy 3, in the middle of the Trinity Alps, I've got plenty of room, especially for a Beatle lover!

(748 posts)Here's my plan. I want to get as far north as I can not using 101 because I don't want to retrace my steps coming south on the 199 then 101, visiting Jedediah Smith, Del Norte and Redwood Natl. Plan to stay in Crescent City, then Arcata.
Looks like you are in a beautiful spot!
