The animals use a non-lethal technique to clear the birds

The two border collies Sally and Ben have been put to work saving Toronto soccer pitches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup by managing and deterring geese, who can drop up to two pounds of waste daily, an obvious hazard to both world-class athletes and professional turf.
So the whole premise is the dog just doesnt chase the geese like you would do, or a normal dog, said geese management technician Gareth Williams, the owner of Border Control Bird Dogs Inc., for almost the last two decades in Stirling, Ont, about two and a half hours east of Toronto. Our dogs are trained. Theyre border collies, which are obviously just by nature, herding dogs. So instead of herding sheep, we change that to geese, and then they stalk the geese and kind of stare at them, what they call collie eyes, how they move calf or sheep around, and the geese start believing that theyre predators on the side. When we move the geese, the common term is hazing. Were not allowed to harm the geese in any way. Its completely non-lethal. Theres no environmental impact. It can take the (border collies) 20 minutes to move 100 metres. Theyre literally taking two steps at a time, almost like theyre in slow motion.
We go twice a day, says Williams of their early morning and afternoon visits. And if we see more geese, well up our visits. Obviously, theyve spent millions of dollars putting down all this turf that the geese find very quickly. Right now, its nesting season and the babies are being born. I think the geese are mainly in the river right behind the (Centennial Park facility) and theyre worried, of course, once the babies are then born, theyll wander up and start eating the grass. Thats the kind of issue we probably will have.

Back when we were competing in herding there was an event to herd ducks and goats as well as sheep

(24,775 posts)1. As a border collie mama, I can attest
to the need these beautiful dogs have to work. Its in their DNA and it is so much fun to watch. My BC hazes magpies out of my yard. Shes not allowed to chase squirrels or other birds and you can just watch her puzzle through that. Shes also tasked with making sure chickens stay off the patio.

My bearded collie was really good at ducks. My oldest child had fun with goats

After a couple of days, the geese are very tentative about returning. And the few geese that do return, when they see the border collies arrive at the site, they immediately leave.
Border collies definitely are a great solution for keeping away problem geese!
