Alex Ovechkin could break Wayne Gretzky's NHL career goals record today, but it's kind of a drag...

Gretzky's record of 894 goals has stood for over two decades. Ovechkin, who plays for the Washington Capitals, can break that mark today against the New York Islanders (if not today, he'll have five more games before the regular season wraps up).

Despite losing his grip on the career goals record, for many, Gretzky remains the rightful owner of the title "world's best hockey player of all time" (a minority will argue for Bobby Orr, who was surely the NHL's best defenseman, but his career was cut short by knee injuries, and others will make a case for Gordie Howe, whose longevity is legendary and he played a more well-rounded game than Gretzky).

For example, Gretzky has 1,963 assists. Ovechkin has 724.

But here's the unfortunate part: Gretzky is a Trump supporter and Ovechkin, who hails from Russia, has long been a big booster of Vladimir Putin.

So, personally, I hope another NHL player comes along someday in my lifetime and breaks Ovechkin's career goals record.

I shouldn’t have laughed at that. No I shouldn’t have. It was wrong ….while still being right.

Coffey, on the left, was once a teammate of Gretzky's (along with Mark Messier).

Paul Coffey, that is.

I'm not 100% sure, but Ovie would most likely be punished for saying anything bad about Putin....most Russian people are punished. Usually punishments are falling out of windows of tall buildings or being poisoned.

I've always wondered if Ovie's praise of Putin is genuine or only to keep peace since his family still lives in Russia.

He might not be as high on scoring goals as Gretzky and Ovie... but I've always like Miroslav Satan. I think the Buffalo Sabres messed up by not contracting him back after the lockout.

That's my 2 cents anyways. 🥅

Fuck Gretzky. At least Ovi has never hid who he is. Wayne is a MAGAt pretending to love his country of Canada all while kissing Trump ass.

The year that he set the all-time single season scoring record, he also set the single-season goals record at 94. For those unfamiliar with the NHL, 100 points in a season has long been a benchmark of a great NHL scorer, so 94 goals is pretty spectacular.

If those 94 goals were subtracted from his points total that season, he would still have won the scoring title.
