a dying mind

the first declines go unnoticed little slips and slides
a loss of spark a loss of gleam in the gradual silence
an excuse for the remotest shifting of which decides
lose focus of the light beam abandon life’s violence
the spaces spread all wider suspect and then forget
moments last so much longer yet end all the sooner
response slower and lighter less remorse and regret
connections grow no stronger in a deficit of humor
the steps always lead down as the memories all fade
that misplaced is the lost nothing is where it should
words become merely sound no decisions are made
huddled deep at all cost afraid to be misunderstood
shadows grow darker and longer in a late afternoon
plateaus grow starker and ponder the coming moon
