a cabinetmaker's thoughts

a cabinetmaker’s thoughts

i have been tired many times in my life but never so tired as I am now
sleep comes too easily and then sleep leaves me sore and unrested
moments of waking and moments of sleep share both body and time
lost minutes lost hours lost days turning into lost years and decades
as blackness is filling and blankness is unfulfilling carving out of a life
sawdust and curling shavings litter the floor amidst the chips of wood
a scent of wood enters the senses masking the many harsher smells
pungent paints stains and varnish various glues drizzled on the table
whirling saw blades scatters bits and pieces of birch fir soft white pine
a grinding disc smooths sharp corners and rounds off jagged edges
apply the contact cement and clamp it tight wait to dry over the night
repeat until the final shape is formed route the details then sand clean
piece by piece the cabinet is built and carefully loaded on the red truck
and carried to a new home to be used and abused until it’s time is over
