James Baldwin was mostly known for his novels, essays and plays, but he did write poetry.

I like, "The Giver"
without reciting the poem,
If you had a mother you loved,
which was an almost supernatural love,
You would also have asked yourself, as you would ask yourself such things about a god.
A god that gave you a soul, a free minded soul, that recognized more than
anything, a true and powerful love for your mother, which is God, you may
later think, but perhaps never fully understood.
What is more important you would ask of her, because you could, because you knew
she loved you, if only one of you could live. Who would she choose?
It was not a question about power. But it was a question about love itself.
It was a question about being given the ultimate gift.
Not devotion, something else.
Not just free will, something else.
When you know what the giver gives, you wonder, no matter how imperfect you are, just how much sacrifice
you will always owe for being so blessed.
