Federal Agencies Reject SIG Sauer P320 Amid Growing Safety Concerns

ICE and the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command are the latest to stop using the popular pistol, following law enforcement agencies across the country.

Both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command have halted use of the SIG Sauer P320 pistol amid widespread concerns about the gun’s safety, according to July memos authenticated by The Trace.

ICE banned officers from carrying the gun in a July 9 memo, which directed the agency’s firearms division to purchase a replacement firearm “as soon as practicable.”

The memo from Deputy Director Madison Sheahan ordered the agency to provide a plan within 10 calendar days to supply Glock pistols to all “authorized officers” moving forward. The portion of the memo reviewed by The Trace does not explain why the change was being made.

On July 21, the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command, which oversees America’s arsenal of long-range nuclear bombers, announced that it was placing the weapon on indefinite pause after the pistol was involved in the death of an airman.
