NRA slaps down Texas GOP ally who proposes gun control idea
September 6, 2019
DALLAS (AP) One of the gun-rights lobbys staunchest defenders in Texas is bucking the National Rifle Association on background checks after a West Texas shooting rampage killed seven people.
The NRA pushed back Friday in a rare moment of the nations most powerful gun-rights group slapping down a key Republican ally.
It came after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told The Dallas Morning News that Texas should crackdown on private gun sales between strangers. Federal officials say the gunman in last weekends attack obtained an assault-style rifle despite failing a federal background check in 2014.
The NRA called Patricks idea a political gambit and disparagingly compared it to those from Democrats.
Patrick has been an avid gun-rights supporter but told the newspaper: someone in the Republican Party has to take the lead on this.

(12,712 posts)1. Another amazing thing
about these times is to see a subversive, terrorist organization like the NRA have any political clout at all. Wow.
Right now, the needs of the many outweigh the voices of a few, to paraphrase what LBJ said in is gun control speech after Robert Kennedy was shot.

(31,850 posts)3. If Dan Patrick is involved, it's bullshit.
He's probably in a 3-way with Lapierre and Nugent as I type this.
