The Trump admin has formally unveiled a program to illegally use money Congress passed for sheltering migrants released from immigration custody to instead detain them in state-run prison camps.

They are calling this — no joke — "shelter in a detention environment."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is preparing to send $608 million to states to construct immigrant detention centers as part of the Trump administration's push to expand capacity to hold migrants.

Congress authorized the funding for govs to "provide temporary shelter and other services to individuals released from DHS custody, helping to facilitate the safe, orderly, and humane release of asylum seekers and families."

Quite obviously that funding can't legally be used for state prison camps.

This is undoubtedly a major misuse of congressional funds. I call on congressional appropriators of both parties to demand a GAO review of this use of spending.

There is no good faith argument that funding for providing shelter to migrants *released* from custody can be used for a detention camp.

My fear is what comes after? Will they “rent out” the detained to perform jobs they previously chose to do then pocket the wages they earn saying it’s to pay for their food/housing? If they’re not free to leave and are forced to work, how is that different from slavery?
