Fourteenth Amendment, Narrated by Sherrilyn Ifill

Jul 6, 2026 #WeAreAmerica250

Dr. Sherrilyn Ifill is a nationally recognized civil rights attorney, expert, and scholar. Ifill is the former president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the founder and director of the 14th Amendment Center for Law & Democracy at Howard University School of Law. Ifill shows us the significance of the Fourteenth Amendment, which established that anyone born in the United States was automatically a citizen.

250 to 250

From the time of our country’s founding 250 years ago, the story of America has been one of the constant efforts of Americans—from all races, ethnicities, genders, and abilities—to make real the belief that we are all created equal and have a right to have a say in our democracy. We will be telling their stories over the next several weeks because now, as ever, “We Are America.”
