I have a question for the cat owners out there.

When Martini licks my nose, is she showing affection or is she grooming me? Martini licks my nose and other parts of my face often, but Holly has only licked my hand once in almost 14 years.

...if you're edible. Maybe acting out his(?) "leopard eating face" fantasies? I have no explanation for Holly, tho.

I have two cats, CJ and Twitch. CJ will groom Twitch but Twitch never grooms CJ because he’s a jerk. I love Twitch but he’s a jerk to CJ. Interestingly, he doesn’t like it when CJ goes out on the front porch without him and will cry at the front door until I let CJ in… then ignore him. Like I said…. he’s a jerk.😂

She pushed Martini away from the wet food, so I had to feed them separately. Then Holly would gulp down her food very fast so she could go get Martini's. Sometimes she ate so fast, she threw up. Martini liked to savor her treats and Holly would gulp hers down so she could take Martini's. I used to have to stand between them to make sure Martini got her fair share. It took several years, but Martini finally starting pushing back. They don't interact very often but every now and again, they'll groom each other and then Holly will attack Martini.

Make a positive reaction, and they will do it as affection. Anytime one of my cats does something I like, I make a big deal out of it, and it usually happens again at a later time. My Gisela holds up a paw for a high five, then head bumps my hand, which is a signal for me to get my face closer for 'kisses and snuzzles' which then must be followed by some Temptations treats, so it can happen again. Ghost will lick my fingers then I smooth his jaws and chin and between his ears like he would do for himself.

would lick my nose and then quickly bite it
it was his "game" with me
it establishes trust, cats consider trust/love the same thing

To get attention. It is affection, but she’s letting me know she wants some loving!

...but also hierarchical dominance/submissive relationships. The foundational behavior is maternal/kitten grooming, which certainly includes both. And it occurs within an adult "cat context" we can only really guess about.

...and often wrestle/attack immediately after. 2 of our 4 often lick my hands for fairly long periods of time.
