Related: About this forumHas something happened to Friskies canned cat food ? Our cats used to eat it all the time, but reject it now.
If it sits in their dish for a while, it dries out and darkens and looks thoroughly unappealing. It didn't used to do that.
I've been trying Mitten's Pickin's (from PetSuppliesPlus, made in Canada which has a good reputation re. pet food) without much success, and now Fancy Feast, which is a lot more expensive and has only a few flavors to choose from, and they don't seem all that wild about it either, though they do eat a little of that.
Both cats are ~12 years old, brother and sister, and started doing this about the same time. I was feeding them only Friskies, and Redford's Naturals dry food when this started.

That you have two cats acting in unison... well, maybe the formula has changed?

(123,196 posts)and the AI said that it was reformulated in spring of this year to eliminate artificial dyes and preservatives. Apparently your cats are not the only finicky eaters as reports are arriving that are other cats are turning up their noses.
Seeing that it takes a few months for products to make it through the shipping cycle, the timing would be about right for them to get the new Friskies mix.

Thanks for that.

(21,965 posts)My black cat Missy doesn't eat canned food, only dry.
So, I don't spend a lot of wet food and they seem to really like Fancy Feast BUT it can be close to well over $1.00 for a little 3 oz. tin at the wrong local store.
I've had luck buying from the foreign vendors on ebay, esp. Vietnam. I try to avoid China being they lie way too much for my likes. They try to hide where they are located until you check-out which pisses me off!
Anyone, I'm well stocked now and trying to keep it down to one tin a day for the two of them with the dry food. Missy likes the Purina dry food for senior cats so that is what I buy and they all seem to like it just fine.
I'm always looking for deals with three cats to feed that are indoor only pets. I use Tidy Cats litter as much as I can. The clumping stuff didn't work well for my late Andreas. It made his paws sore so I switched back to non-clumping. I have the mats around the boxes in the garage and a tarp on the one still left indoors. It works, that's all I care about and it isn't costing me a fortune!

(7,247 posts)Both the dog and the cat are fussy eaters though.
Tricked them both, gave the cat dog food and the dog cat food.
Smiles all round.
But pet diet preferences do change with age, our old dog now eats mashed up tin stuff, with some water added.
Bit of stock cube mixed in for smell/flavour. Bit of a warming up in the microwave.
Now on 4 small meals a day, after weeks of gastric problems - drooling and vomiting - doing better on some vet provided medication. Steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs and pain killers.
Only $850 for that visit, blood tests and X-rays - good news, no cancer though.
It would be the lack of preservatives that allows changes in the smell and color once exposed to the air that turn the cat off in your case.

(3,786 posts)Both my older dogs have heart disease--so believe me I understand about the vet bills! The male is on all kinds of drugs: diuretics that deplete his potassium so he needs to take potassium, and meds to make his heart function more efficient. I have to be careful about not giving him human food or anything with salt--the boy loves Fritos, but can't have them anymore. I often cook them special food with plain chicken, brown rice, oatmeal, and veggies. They love this but I often have chicken broth left over. I could freeze that and add it to their food and not have to worry about added salt! I could make doggie snacks with that broth as well! Thanks for the idea, Aussie!
