I grew up in the south and have only had the tomato cucumber salad (a lot!). It’s one of my favorites. I actually made it the other day. My sister just keeps a big bowl of it in her fridge all summer. The Czech’s make a similar salad called sopsky salad. But, they add banana peppers and feta cheese. It’s yummy!
I had never even heard of tomato pie until I moved to PA. (However, growing up, I HATED tomatoes. So, could have missed it!)
The southern cracker salad I have never been served. I looked up its origins and it appears it’s more of a southeastern GA recipe. (I’m from Alabama.)

Made it every Sunday from home grown tomatoes and cucumbers and onions.

She also used corn oil - not olive oil. She added a bit of fresh parsley and dill from her garden.

I hated it! The Rose does not eat tomatoes. 🤢

So she made me Cucumber Salad:

Cucumbers thinly sliced
Yellow onion chopped
White vinegar
A bit of fresh dill and a “smidge” of celery seed
Sugar to taste
Salt and pepper

Can’t give you exact measurements. As she would say “add enough until it tastes good.”

Yes, smidge is a culinary term.😉

Enjoy!

I still make her cucumber salad and my grandkids love it!
