Related: About this forumAmos Arnold, my Great Great Grandfather born in 1881
My brother Tom recently texted the newspaper article of my Great great Grandfather Amos Arnold who was born in 1881 and died in 1913, age 82. One of his daughters was Seba Linn who had a daughter named Frances (my grandmother) who married Merritt Kendrick. It was so interesting, I thought I would share it on DU Geneaology forum
I extracted the text from the article and typed it out.

Amos S. Arnold Son of Stuckley and Lovisy
Arnold was born at Schuyler Dell Falls, Clinton County, New York January 20, 1881, and died at his home in Roberts, Illinois, Sunday morning, April 13, 1913, aged 82 years, 2 months and 24 days.
(my notes: The Falls. The namesake Schuyler Falls is a cascading series of drops cumulatively measuring about 30 feet along the Salmon River.)
He grew to manhood in his native county and was married July 23, 1857, to Miss Lora Ann Johnson also of Schuyler's Falls. Ten years later they came to Illinois and settled on a farm north west of where is now Roberts, October 26, S87. This farm now known as the Arnold homestead was their home for more than thirty years.
They came to Roberts, March 1, 1898, and have lived here since.
The deceased was a strong robust man and was never seriously ill until within the past two years, during which time his health has not been the best. He was not only strong of body, ha also had a strong clear mind which he developed by careful thinking and study. He read much and carefully thought over all read. In history and science he was especially well versed and often quoted.
Although he had but but a common school education he used that education to advantage and by self study, had a broad understanding in scientific subjects. He was a lover of plant and animal, life and could see beauties in them that to the ordinary mind were invisible
He was a kind husband and and father. To his children he was a companion as well as a father. He was interested in what interested them and lea them to be interested in what interested him. He was always held in highest esteem.
He was obliging to all; conscientious in all his dealings. I was always just but, merciful and was one of the few men who could meet all classes as equals, and all men found in him an equal. His statements were the plain unvarnished truth and he disliked deception of any kind.
Mr. Arnold always tool an active part in the political affairs of his community although never seeking political preferment for himself. He was interested in just and up- right government for the good. of His friends honored him however sending him three times to represent his township, on the County Board of Supervisors, 1892, 1893, 1894.
He also satisfactorily filled several school and Local offices.
He left to mourn their loss, his two sons, Johnson, D. and Seward;
four daughters, Mrs. Hattie McNiel of, Melvin, Mrs. Elma Cook and Mrs. Seba Linn of Roberts and Mrs. Mary Tarvin of Onarga; (Seba Linn is my great grandmother)
one sister, Miss Samantha Arnold of Schuyler's Falls, New York; also twenty-three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Amos S. Arnold died at his home in Roberts, Sunday, April 13, 1913, aged 82 years, 2 months and 24 days
Funeral Services will be held at the residence in Roberts, Tuesday, April 15, 1913, at 2:00 p. m, Rev F. DeClark and Rev. W. B. Milne officiating Interment in Roberts Cemetery

(5,060 posts)If he was born in 1881 and died in 1913, he would have been around 32.
Also, if he had been born in 1881, he could not have married Miss Lora Ann in 1857.
Now if he had been born in 1831, then everything would make sense. Or if he was born in 1881, and died in 1963, that would also make sense. If his birth had occurred on the later date, his marriage to Miss Lora Ann would have occurred about 1907.
Looking at it again, it seems whoever wrote or printed the original obituary for the paper made the typo of the birthdate.
