Netanyahu gambled by targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar. It appears to have backfired

JERUSALEM (AP) — When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered this week’s attempted assassination of Hamas leaders in Qatar, he took a major gamble in his campaign to pound the group into submission.

With signs growing that the mission failed, that gamble appears to have backfired.

Netanyahu had hoped to kill Hamas’ senior exiled leaders to get closer toward his vision of “total victory” against the militant group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and pressure it into surrendering after nearly two years of war in the Gaza Strip.

Instead, Hamas claims its leaders survived, and Netanyahu’s global standing, already badly damaged by the scenes of destruction and humanitarian disaster in Gaza, took another hit.

Netanyahu warns Israel may strike Hamas in Qatar again after Trump declares it "will not happen"

Updated on: September 12, 2025 / 12:42 PM EDT / CBS/AP

As the people killed in Israel's surprise strike on a Hamas meeting in the Qatari capital were buried at Doha's Grand Mosque on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to launch new attacks on the country — a close U.S. ally — if it refused to eject the U.S.- and Israeli-designated terrorist group's political representatives.

Qatar's government has condemned Israel's Tuesday strikes, saying the "criminal attack constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and norms, and poses a serious threat to the security and safety of the State of Qatar and its people."

The U.S. has relied on Qatar to act as a go-between with Hamas, with which it has long had ties. Working through Hamas' political office in Doha, both the Trump administration and the Biden administration before that have pushed hard, along with Egypt, to broker a ceasefire in the nearly two-year war between Israel and Hamas, sparked by the Palestinian group's Oct. 7, 2023 attack. Senior Israeli officials have also traveled to Qatar many times to take part in these negotiations since the war began.

Netanyahu drew a parallel between Israel's attack in Doha and the U.S. invasion of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu invokes 9/11 to justify strike on Hamas in Qatar

Story by Francesca Chambers, USA TODAY • 3d • 3 min read

WASHINGTON − Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invoked 9/11 on the eve of the U.S. terrorist attack's anniversary to justify his strike on Hamas leaders inside Qatar. Israel's attack in Qatar, which has been hosting Gaza ceasefire talks, drew a rebuke from the White House and was condemned by countries around the world.

Netanyahu said in Sept. 10 remarks that Hamas' attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, was his country's version of the terror attack that took the lives nearly 3,000 people and led to the United States' invasion of Afghanistan more than two decades ago.

"Tomorrow is September 11th. We remember September 11th. On that day, Islamist terrorists committed the worst savagery on American soil since the founding of the United States," Netanyahu said. "We also have a September 11th. We remember October 7th."

Bibi is not trying to get rid of Hamas. He's trying to get rid of all Palestinian citizens.
