Enough Is Enough. Israel Is Committing War Crimes

Ehud Olmert is an Israeli politician and lawyer who served as the prime minister of Israel from 2006 to 2009. This is an OpEd from May 27, 2025, but I don't see it posted on DU. There are references to it in other posts via CNN and regurgitations on Huffington Post. Let me know if these gift links are not working. I think the OpEd is worth reading in its entirety.

The government of Israel is currently waging a war without purpose, without goals or clear planning and with no chances of success. Never since its establishment has the State of Israel waged such a war. The criminal gang headed by Benjamin Netanyahu has set a precedent without equal in Israel's history in this area, too.

The obvious result of Operation Gideon's Chariots is, first and foremost, the confused activity of Israeli military units deployed around Gaza. This is true particularly in neighborhoods where our soldiers have already fought, were hurt and fell while killing many Hamas combatants, who deserve to die, and many more innocent civilians. These have joined the statistics of pointless victims among the Palestinian population, reaching monstrous proportions.

Recent operations in Gaza have nothing to do with legitimate war goals. The government sends our soldiers – and the military obeys – to wander around Gaza City, Jabalya and Khan Yunis neighborhoods in an illegitimate military operation. This is now a private political war. Its immediate result is the transformation of Gaza into a humanitarian disaster area.

Likud and other, even worse right-wing parties combined have the support of a large majority of Israelis. It would just be another coalition of the genocidal "God gave us this Land, so fuck off" sociopathic lunatics, the less extreme right-wing and Likud.

No, it's Israeli society itself that has to be shaken out of its impunity-driven, cocooned and West- protected, supremacist religio-ethnic foundations. It is now so firmly entrenched that even the world's revulsion about Gaza and coming reckoning may only serve to further deepen its sense of specialness and aggrievement - rather than serve as a vehicle for atonement and reconciliation/restitution of Palestinian rights.

But how do you change an entire value system and siege mentality bolstered by nationalist myths and unquestioning certitude of ALWAYS being the aggrieved party rather than the perpetrator of crimes, brutal occupation, land theft and aggression?

De-programming is much bigger than just getting rid of Netanyahu. I'm afraid it's not likely especially as religion is involved.

As if Israel hasn't been committing war crimes LONG before Mr. Olmert noticed.

Still, kudos to him for finally speaking up. His opinion is not popular in Israeli society, with the exception of a few remaining, brave and principled left-wingers.

Maybe by about 80, unless you think this history started on Oct. 7th.

That has changed dramatically with both of us now calling out Israel for genocide to protect Bibi from his lawlessness.
