Why Iran Is Running Out of Water - CaspianReport

All across Iran, lakes are vanishing, aquifers are drying up, and rivers are turning to sludge. Put simply: the country is running out of water. Water supplies are diverted to water-intensive agriculture and industrial production with little regard to where the water comes from and will it be there in the future.

That's why the country is intent on desalinization of bodies of water, perhaps why it has the need to occupy neighboring lands.
