Schiphol Airport has become the first major international airport to introduce hydrogen-powered vehicles into daily ground operations, advancing its goal of
emission-free operations by 2030.
Vehicles in use: A specially developed hydrogen tow tractor will move KLM Boeing 737 aircraft several times a day, while a Toyota prototype pick-up truck will support Bird Control.
Supporting infrastructure: A temporary on-site hydrogen refuelling station has been installed.
Proven concept: The pilot builds on a successful test of a hydrogen-powered ground power unit (GPU) that supplies parked aircraft with emission-free electricity.
Royal Schiphol Group is assessing the practical performance of hydrogen, focusing on usability, range, and integration into airport systems.
Hydrogen is seen as a strong complement to battery-electric vehicles, offering fast refuelling, reliable range, and efficiency in low temperaturesparticularly for vehicles that must always remain available, such as emergency services.
The initiative is a collaborative effort with airlines, ground handlers, manufacturers, and research institutes, aimed at cutting indirect Scope 3 CO emissions and accelerating sustainable solutions across the aviation sector...more
