HyTerra Strikes Natural Hydrogen in Kansas at 96.1%: Is Geologic H2 the Game-Changer?
HydrogenFuelNews.com | Bret Williams | May 6, 2025
HyTerra just hit something biglike, 96.1% pure hydrogen bigstraight from underground Kansas. Yeah, let that marinate for a sec.
While most of the world is throwing billions at electrolysis and renewable-heavy solutions, this Aussie newcomer may have just sidestepped the whole high-cost green hydrogen grind. How? They went old schoolby drilling into natural hydrogen buried deep below our feet.
The Discovery Thats Turning Heads
The Sue Duroche-3 well, sitting on Kansas Nemaha Ridge, pulled up hydrogen at a jaw-dropping 96.1% purity. That might ring a belllogs from back in the 80s hinted at something similar. But back then, it was all speculation. This time? Its the real deal, backed by data. It also marks the kickoff of HyTerras North American drilling campaign, with the Blythe 13-20 well next in line.
Why this matters: Hydrogen this clean barely needs refining and might be extracted at a cost below $1/kg. Thats huge. No need for energy-hungry processes, no waiting on renewable grid buildouts. For industrial decarbonization, this could be the shortcut everyones been looking for.
So, Whats the Secret Sauce?
No fracking. HyTerras approach leans on old-school oil industry data and adds some 21st-century mud gas loggingtuned specifically for hydrogen.
Their new partner, Avant Energy, brings cutting-edge subsurface imaging to steer the drill where it counts.
Add to that hydrogen isotopic analysis, and theyve got a solid way to tell deep-earth hydrogen apart from the surface-level stuff. This isnt a random gambleits calculated, precise, and its starting to deliver.
The Bigger Play
Lets be blunt: HyTerra has its eyes on becoming the first legit player in commercial natural hydrogen production in North America...more

HyTerra Drilling Sue Duroche 3
Naysayers said it couldn't be done. Like they always do.

(35,776 posts)..."green" hydrogen bukkshit.
People who work in advertising are not required to have ever opened a science book, and it shows here. To be qualified to say what can and cannot be done, opening a science book would be useful.
Let's be clear on what has been done toward establishing a putative "hydrogen economy" : Nothing at all except tiresome and dishonest marketing, all of it designed to green washing fossil fuels.
Now people working to greenwash fossil fuels as hydrogen obviously don't give a shit about the collapse of the planetary atmosphere. And in assuming that would should just drill to burn shit until it runs out they obviously express contempt for future generations.
There is nothing, nothing at all, good about hydrogen bullshit. It's been going on for decades as a distraction thriving on ignorance and fantasy.
