STV journalists previously took strike action over pay

Journalists at STV are to vote on taking strike action over the company's plans to scrap the separate news service for the north of Scotland with the risk of compulsory redundancies.

The company wants show a single programme covering central and Northern Scotland. Up to 30 jobs in news could go.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) says industrial action could take place before Christmas.

STV has started to tell individual staff their jobs could be at risk.

The journalists are right to strike IMO.

I'm surprised STV is even thinking of doing this, considering that a similar thing was tried with ITV when the ITV Border and ITV Tyne Tees regions had their news teams "merged" and news from Carlisle was no more, now done out of Gateshead (Newcastle). That "Experiment" lasted a few years before OFCOM forced it to be reversed.

Also there are many parts of the USA that have population sizes similar to or less than that covered by STV North (formerly known as Grampian TV) and have TV stations that give viewers a choice of local news. The BBC have only done a pan-Scotland news programme on TV, though Radio Scotland has some options outs in Shetland and Orkney. No other broadcaster does local news in Scotland. IMO if STV played their cards right, they could go all in on local news, pay less to ITV for network programming, and build on their STV & Grampian heritage.
