Trump slaps fresh US tariffs on heavy trucks, drugs and kitchen cabinets

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump on Thursday unleashed a fresh round of punishing tariffs on a broad range of imported goods, saying the U.S. will impose 100% duties on branded drugs and 25% tariffs on heavy-duty trucks, among other import tariffs, starting next week.

Tariffs have been a feature of Trump's second term, with duties on trading partners ranging from 10% to 50% and other targeted tariffs on a wide variety of products, casting a shadow over the global economic outlook and paralyzing business decision-making.

The new actions are seen as part of the Trump administration's shift to better-established legal authorities for its tariff actions, given the risks associated with a case before the Supreme Court on the legality of his sweeping global tariffs.

Trump also said he would start charging a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, with all the new duties to take effect from October 1.

Tariff tax effects haven't bitten fully. There is some inventory in warehouses, and some adjustments have been made. Well off consumers are still buying, but less well off are shifting purchases down scale, trying to make do.

CarMax posted disappointing earnings on lower sales of used cars.

Operational metrics further highlighted the struggles: retail used vehicle unit sales decreased by 5.4% to 199,729 units, with comparable store sales declining by 6.3%. Total revenue from used vehicle sales fell 7.2% to $5.27 billion. Wholesale vehicle unit sales also experienced a 2.2% decline. While the retail gross profit per used unit remained relatively stable at $2,216, the overall total gross profit decreased by 6% to $718 million.
