Social Security may lose thousands more staff under new Trump rule

(Reuters) -The Social Security Administration could lose thousands more staff beyond the 7,000 already targeted for cuts due to a move by the Trump administration to reclassify government employees, making them easier to fire, worker advocates said on Friday.
President Donald Trump said last week his administration would proceed with plans to designate tens of thousands of federal workers as "at will" employees involved in policy decisions, stripping them of civil service protections.
Trump's announcement triggered fresh scrutiny of an email sent this month by Acting Social Security Commissioner Leland Dudek to staff detailing plans to convert a wide range of agency positions to the new "schedule policy/career" classification.
In the April 7 email seen by Reuters and first reported by Government Executive, Dudek instructed staff to reclassify key departments, including the offices of the Chief Information Officer and Disability Determinations.

Your new Social Security Statement is now available.
Your Social Security Statement is streamlined and easier to read than ever before. That is because we have redesigned the Statement to provide you the most useful information up front and at a glance.
We encourage you to check your Statement at least once a year to review:
Your earnings record (to make sure its accurate and notify us if you see any errors);
Your personalized monthly retirement benefit estimates (which now display how much you can expect to receive depending on when you decide to start your benefits between ages 62 and 70);
Other useful information that will explain your benefits and help you prepare for your financial future; and
New fact sheets that provide additional information based on your specific age group and earnings situation.
You can access your new Statement by signing into your account at socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement.
Now that you can access your Statement instantly and anytime online, we will not automatically send one by mail.
We hope you find your new Statement useful and informative.
With fear and trepidation, I tried to log into my account, and this was the response, preceeded by a big, red exclamation point:
This service is not available at this time.
Please try again during our regular service hours (Eastern Time)

(2,293 posts)Or did you try and sign in via ssa.gov and using an already established username and password?
I have been tracking what is going on w/these letters.
I got a similar letter, and did not click the hyperlink. One of the things that is strange is that the email says it originated from ssa.gov. I called my local office, and they said they don't send emails.
There is a lot of conflicting info coming from the Soc. Security Administration right now.

(1,954 posts)Even though it appeared to come from ssa.gov, I was afraid to trust it. So I went to the site and logged in there, using my established UN and PW.
Update: I just logged in successfully, and was able to obtain the desired information. However, I did notice the following advisory above my Earnings Record, which I never noticed before. I does not lessen my concerns:
We base benefit estimates on current law, which Congress has revised before and may revise again to address needed changes. Learn more about Social Security's future at ssa.gov/ThereForMe.
