Come on Canada!

One up Europe by partnering with BYD to open electric vehicle plants in Canada on the east coast which gives a short shipping route to Europe.

1. Why would BYD build plants in Canada if they could import them from China to the EU with no tariffs?

2. The person is just saying Canada should open a ev plant

and sell to the EU. Not that it has to be a particular ev company. We would get the same no tariff deal i would assume. We have cheap land. We are much closer to the EU than China. We have rare earth minerals for ev batteries. We should get on that right away.

3. Perhaps, seems like it would be cheaper to build them in China instead of paying higher wages in Canada

Most of the parts would still come from China, so the shipping wouldn't seem to be a significant advantage.

I suspect if the tariffs stay, that General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis plants will face cuts in production and layoffs.

4. I guess so. Canadian ev plants in Canada are only viable if the are sold a short distance away

to the US, I guess. But I would still look into it if I were the government. Maybe Canada could make ev batteries.

Projects in the works. That was a big push by Trudeau government. Canada has a 100% tariff on China EV’s to protect our ev market. That may have to be looked at again. It is why China just put tariffs on Canada, that is their excuse even though the ev tariffs was last Oct. I am sure if Carney gets in there will be a re-alignment of our trade with new agreements. If we can make a mutually satisfactory agreement with China that breaks Musk, I am all for it. Just no more selling our raw materials, time to sell added value.

7. If the tariffs remain what is going to happen to the Canadian car industry?

Specifically, the large plants owned by General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. If like I heard, many Canadians are boycotting US companies, and exporting the vehicles to the US isn't economically feasible due to the tariffs, does it make sense to keep those plants running at regular production levels?

It would be cool if Canada developed their own car industries starting from design all the way through production.

8. That is my hope. There have been layoffs at 2 of the plants

you mentioned. I would love to see some car company survive and build in Canada. They could stick their finger in the eye of the colour lobby other carmakers use and make a few cars in many colours for Canadians. I don't think it is feasible to start a Canadian company as it could not grow outside of Canada as there is too much competition. The auto pact worked. It is such a shame to see it, and the trade deals that followed, go, at least for our auto-workers.

9. We have a semi-idle ev plant

here in Ingersoll Ontario. They are last-stage delivery vans but passenger cars could be an option if CAMI (GM )
wanted to keep the workforce now attuned to electric conveyances working in their area of expertise and experience. With a cooperative effort from GM and government involvement there’s no big need to build a new plant if we already have one.
