Former state lawmaker RJ May charged with evading taxes for three years while in office

COLUMBIA — Former state Rep. RJ May was charged with three counts of failing to file and pay state individual income tax covering three consecutive years while he served as a sitting member of the state Legislature.

The Nov. 20 charges come following a monthslong federal investigation and subsequent guilty plea by the disgraced lawmaker on criminal charges related to child pornography.

May, 39, is currently being held in the Edgefield County Detention Center awaiting sentencing in January on federal charges of distributing child sexual abuse materials.

The state Department of Revenue released warrants that detail May’s failure to file or pay the state income tax from 2022 to 2024. Investigators said he had a total gross income in excess of $323,000 for those three years.

If I fail to inspect my vehicle or carry insurance, I get a notice in 14 days. The previous inspection station may even call me sooner.
