Race for Isle of Palms mayor remains too close to call between Pounds and Pierce

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) — (UPDATE, 10:00 p.m.) — Residents of the Isle of Palms will have to wait a little longer to learn who their next mayor will be, as a razor-thin margin and uncounted provisional ballots leave the race unresolved.

Preliminary results show incumbent Mayor Phillip Pounds leading City Councilmember Scott Pierce by just six votes. But a poll worker said 14 provisional ballots still need to be reviewed – enough to shift the final outcome in either direction.

“We’ll probably have to wait until at least Thursday before they certify the vote and see who actually won,” Pounds said. “I know I’m up by six tonight, but we need to wait on the provisionals.”

Pierce said he was encouraged by voter turnout and is prepared to wait for the official results.
