Hundreds turn out for first day of early voting in Spartanburg County special election

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Voters are set to decide who will fill the unexpired terms of Spartanburg County sheriff and County Council District 3 in a "high-profile" election.

Monday was the first day of early voting for the primary election of both seats. The Spartanburg County Administration Building, the only place where people can vote ahead of the general election, saw hundreds of people make it to the polls.

Nine candidates are on the sheriff ballot, which was left vacant on May 23 after Chuck Wright, who served for 20 years, resigned. Six are campaigning for the role of County Council District 3, which was previously served by David Britt for three decades.

Registration and Elections Director John Baucom described this election as a "high profile" case piquing the interest of many.
