Council sets date for special election on $50M bond

After a lengthy back-and-forth discussion at the Monday night meeting, the City Council voted unanimously to hold a special election on Feb. 3, 2026.

The ballot will include a question asking voters to approve a $50-million recreational bond. In June, the General Assembly approved legislation allowing the city to hold a special election for this purpose. On Monday night, the council debated only the date the special election would be held.

Steve Gothberg, director of capital projects for the school department, presented the item, which was heard first by the ordinance committee and later by the full council. He was joined by School Committee Chair Shaun Galligan. Schools Superintendent William McCaffrey was not in attendance.

Gothberg explained that construction of the high schools would exceed the $350-million bond approved by voters in November 2022. Completion of the projects, including fully equipped athletic facilities, will require some of the $50-million bond.
