Luzerne County to get new voting equipment with $2.9M lease

WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County voters will start using new voting equipment from Hart InterCivic next year.

County council unanimously voted Tuesday night to authorize the execution of a five-year, $2.87 million lease with Hart InterCivic. The county has been using voting equipment from Dominion Voting Systems since 2020.

Council approved a $3.6 million contract with Dominion Voting Systems in 2019. Dominion’s five-year contract for support and licensing expires at the end of this year.

The county plans to change its primary voting method at polls to hand-marked paper ballots and significantly reduce the amount of ballot-marking devices used at polls. The lease with Hart InterCivic will cost $574,000 annually, and ancillary costs related to election preparations are projected to decrease from $851,502 this year to $245,490 next year.
