Running to run an election: York County is short of poll workers

There are 161 voting precincts where York County's nearly 330,000 registered voters cast their ballots.

Each precinct is overseen by a judge of elections and two inspectors — a Republican and a Democrat — who are elected during municipal elections held in odd years. Elections could not happen without people in these roles, although numbers are staggeringly low.

A fully participatory general election would require 161 Republicans to face 161 Democrats for the opportunity to serve as election judges. Yet only 29 of the county’s 161 races will even have a candidate in this year's general election.

For all the anxiety riddling voter confidence across America since 2020, it is reasonable to think more than 2% of York County’s voting locations would host a competitive judge of elections race in November.
