Oklahoma voters could eliminate property taxes

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma residents may get to vote to eliminate property taxes for homes they live in.

Two lawmakers and a former legislator on Friday filed papers with the Oklahoma Secretary of State to circulate an initiative petition to let voters decide to gradually reduce some property taxes and end them in 2029.

State Question 841 would not apply to bonded indebtedness incurred by schools, counties, municipalities or other political subdivisions prior to Dec. 31, 2026.

The change would be effective Jan. 1, 2027, when an amount equal to about 33% of the full assessed value of the homestead would be exempt. The next year, it would increase to nearly 67% before being eliminated in 2029.

And it would also take away money for health and social services and infrastructure.

Somebody explain this to me simply...how does the state/county/city make up revenue? Through sales tax or "fees" (God forbid they call anything a tax) or on the back of visitors? Or just cut the services that were being funded?

One merely needs to look at who they elect to understand why a lack of education serves their rulers well.

It's primarily about privatizing education, but other municipal services will also be negatively impacted.

I always wonder where the tax revenue is made up from there. States with no income tax have high property tax rates.

Why do ReTHUGlicans hate paying taxes so much? It’s their only play on anything, like it’s some magic elixir while still receiving services.

want to completely eliminate government. trump is influenced by Bannon and Miller, especially. This stripping of government is right up there with what Bannon has been pushing since before trump's "first term." He believes in order coming from chaos. The chaos is a country without any kind of functioning government. The "order" which follows mostly closely resembles a military coup, sitting a monarch on the throne to "rule" a country without any type of government interference. I think we call those "third world countries" these days, but I believe what Bannon, Miller, trump, etc, want goes beyond third world status. He would declare us in a category all by ourselves, and for once, he'd be speaking truth... but it won't be a country fit for anyone but those with the most money to buy survival. The rest of us will either have to find a way to get out, or die in the trying... because there will be no room, no help, for us.

I think Bannon has made himself a complete laughingstock on purpose. We can joke all we want about the red-faced, bulbous drunk face and four-shirted form and it works to normalize his evil. Other countries, like Italy, caught on quickly with what he wanted to do and threw him out of the country. Only America and Germany seem to be dumb enough to keep subsidizing him.
