Burney protesting Red Springs mayoral election

RED SPRINGS — A protest regarding the legitimacy of some ballots cast in the election for mayor of Red Springs has further delayed a recount in that race, which currently sits at a margin of one vote.

Red Springs Commissioner Duron Burney, who currently trails Commissioner Caroline Sumpter by one vote, is protesting whether 19 ballots were cast by individuals competent to do so.

After a recount was initially set to take place on Friday but delayed due to the protest being filed, the protest was set to be heard by the Robeson County Board of Elections on Monday morning; certification of the election and a potential recount would have taken place following the outcome of the protest. Burney’s legal counsel, however, requested more time before the protest could be heard, and it has been delayed to 9 a.m. on Friday.

“Competency of certain individuals that voted (is being challenged),” Robeson County Board of Elections Director Jessica Davis told The Robesonian. “We’ve had certain other people come down from state organizations, and they came as well (Monday) morning and just had some comments to say on that.”
