Meet Durham's Ward 1 city council election candidates

The Ward 1 city council race features incumbent DeDreana Freeman and Matt Kopac, an environmental policy focused newcomer who led in the primary election.

Ward 1, the first City Council race on the ballot, encompasses Northern Durham, including Duke’s East Campus. The Chronicle had the opportunity to talk to Freeman and Kopac about their platform and goals for Durham.

Both candidates emphasize the role of community in their candidacy and propose policies to increase housing accessibility and responses to environmental threats.
