Incumbent Charlotte mayor is projected winner of 2025 primary election

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Incumbent Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles was the projected winner in the city’s primary election, with a significant lead as of late Tuesday night.

Lyles was running against four other Democratic mayoral candidates in the city’s primary election on Tuesday, Sept. 9, ahead of the municipal general election this November. As of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lyles had more than 70% of the vote with 100% of precincts reporting.

Mayoral candidate Brendan Maginnis had the second-most votes among the Democrats -- though his percentage was significantly smaller at 12.3%. Candidate Jaraun Boyd had 10% of the vote, Tigress McDaniel had 4.2%, and Delter Guin III had 2.86%.

Several of the primary races had an obvious projected winner as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, including most of the district races for the Charlotte City Council.
