The tension of the mayor's race hangs over a 'unity' event with Brooklyn Democrats.

The Brooklyn Democratic Party hosted a gala on Thursday night that it billed as a celebration of the “power in unity.”

But it wasn’t hard to find signs of division tugging at the local Democratic establishment in the final days of New York City’s bitter mayoral race, in which former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat who is running as an independent after losing the primary, is fighting to catch up to Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the party’s nominee.

Jumaane Williams, the city’s public advocate, said he found it “very discouraging” that Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic minority leader from Brooklyn, had not endorsed Mr. Mamdani, who maintains a double-digit lead in most polls.

“He still has some time, and I hope that he does,” Mr. Williams, a progressive who has backed Mr. Mamdani, said of Mr. Schumer. Mr. Williams added that he found Mr. Schumer’s silence particularly frustrating because “Democratic leaders always scream about endorsing the nominee.”
