'Drop Dead City' doc explores 1975 financial crisis

n 1975, a combination of economic stagnation, disinvestment and mismanagement of the budget led New York City into a fiscal crisis unlike any other.

The result was shuttered schools, firehouses and mountains of garbage on the streets.

But what happened next is perhaps more important, the city somehow united to pull itself out of financial ruin.

The story is told in the new documentary, “Drop Dead City,” which premieres at the IFC Center Friday.
