Onondaga County election officials boot 2 Democrats from Syracuse mayor's race

Syracuse, N.Y. – Two candidates in the Syracuse mayor’s race lost their bids today to qualify for the Democratic primary election in June, according to the Onondaga County Board of Elections.

The board formally disqualified candidates Alfonso Davis and Jimmy Oliver, ruling that they failed to obtain enough valid signatures from Syracuse Democratic voters to qualify for a spot on the ballot.

The decision sets up a three-person race among Syracuse Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens, and Syracuse Common Councilors Pat Hogan and Chol Majok in the Democratic primary election.

Earlier in the week, election officials issued a preliminary ruling that found Davis and Oliver each fell about 200 signatures short of the 1,000 valid signatures needed to qualify for the primary ballot.
