Ballot Error in Berkeley Heights Delays Full Election Results
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ A mail-in ballot error in Berkeley Heights will delay the full reporting of local election results, the Union County Board of Elections confirmed. The original ballot incorrectly instructed voters to select two candidates instead of three for the open three-year Board of Education seats.
Union County Board of Elections Administrator Nicole L. DiRado told TAPinto Berkeley Heights that corrected ballots have been mailed to voters and are already being returned. If we receive a corrected ballot, the corrected ballot will be counted. If the voter sent in their ballot and does not send in the corrected ballot, their first ballot will still be counted, she said.
Voters have until six days after Election Day to ensure their ballots are counted, provided they are postmarked on or before Election Day, Nov. 4, and received by the board by the statutory deadline of Nov. 10.
As a result, Berkeley Heights full results, including those for the Board of Education and Town Council, will not be available on election night. Machine votes cast on Election Day and early voting ballots will be included in the unofficial results. However, mail-in ballots that were corrected following the ballot error will be counted only after the Nov. 10 deadline.
