NJ GOP sees big increase in voters, but Dems maintain healthy lead
Over Democrat Phil Murphys two terms as governor, New Jersey Republicans saw significant growth in voter registration compared to Democrats but Democrats maintain a voter advantage that tops 860,000, according to state data.
An analysis of registration trends from August 2017 to August 2025 shows that both major parties have expanded their voter bases, while the population of unaffiliated voters has declined slightly, by about 18,000 people, or less than a percent. Murphy was first elected in November 2017 and leaves office in January.
The number of registered Republicans increased by nearly 433,000 voters in that time period, a 35% rise. Democratic registration increased by roughly 427,000 voters, or 20%. Compared to August 2021 three months before Murphy won reelection there are 167,000 more Republicans statewide, an 11% increase, while the number of Democrats has dropped by 47,000, about 2%.
After Democrats widened their registration advantage over Republicans to 1.1 million voters in August 2021, the gap has dipped to 864,825.
