Party declaration deadline for '25 primary is Wednesday
The deadline to change party affiliation for the June 10 primary election is Wednesday, April 16.
In New Jersey, voters may change their party affiliation at any time except during the 55 days before a primary election.
Unaffiliated voters, sometimes called independents, may declare their party affiliation up until Election Day with one exception: automatic vote-by-mail voters who are unaffiliated with a party receive Democratic and Republican ballots and must declare their affiliation by June 3 in order to receive a mail-in ballot. That means unaffiliateds may declare during the early, in-person period or on June 10, but they must take specific steps to vote by mail.

Party declaration changes may also be made during a transaction at a New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission agency. The best practice is to get a receipt of your party change, keep a copy, or take a photo. Faxed and other electronic transmissions will not be accepted. Postmark
