Dartmouth College removes weather vane over its portrayal of Native American
Updated: 3:00 PM EDT Jun 26, 2020
HANOVER, N.H. A Dartmouth College weather vane that sat atop the campus' famous Baker Library Tower for nearly a century has been removed.
Crews used a crane and bucket to remove the weather vane Thursday. Campus officials cited the device as a display of offensive imagery earlier this month.
In a release, the college described the weather vane as portraying "...a Native American, wearing feathers and smoking a long pipe, seated on the ground in front of Eleazar Wheelock, Dartmouth's founder. A round shape behind Wheelock is presumed to be a barrel of rum, according to Dartmouth historical records."

(16,903 posts)1. I sort of like this image. The way I saw this,
the Indian is smoking a peace pipe. And they almost always SIT with friends.
Call me crazy, but that was my first reaction.
