https://minnesotareformer.com/2025/09/02/walz-to-call-special-session-on-gun-control-propose-assault-weapons-ban/Walz, after welcoming Deerwood Elementary School students to their first day of school in Eagan, said Minnesota needs to take action following a mass shooting at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis that killed 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski and wounded 21 others last week.
If Minnesota lets this moment slide and we determine that its okay for little ones to not be safe in a school environment or a church environment, then shame on us, Walz said. Im going to call (lawmakers) back.
The governor said he will release a gun control package this week that will include an assault weapons ban.

(21 posts)After the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent police riots in which police slashed tires of press vehicles and assaulted citizens on their porches with paint guns, the mayor of Minneapolis complained that he needed the Executive power to rein in police lawlessness. This caused the City Charter Commission to offer up a referendum to change the charter. It passed in 2021. So now when the mayor has been directed by that change to call on the City Council to legislate changes making Minneapolis citizens safer, he chooses to call on the State to do something. That is performative piffle.
Minnesota state law prohibits cities and other local governments from regulating firearms, ammunition, and related components, except for regulating the discharge of firearms and having ordinances identical to state law. This "firearm preemption" statute, Minn. Stat. § 471.633, completely excludes cities from establishing their own regulations and is a barrier to local gun control measures, such as those advocated for by some Minnesota mayors.
There was a press conference today held by Frey & Carter as well as several suburban mayors asking for a change to this law if the state fails to pass stricter gun reform.
