Related: About this forumHas anyone renewed their car registration recently?
Last year i selected an online reminder. The tag expires in August and previously, with mail notification, I would get a reminded in mid July.
So I just went to the DVS site and paid.
But... now that I compare it to last year, exactly the same numbers. Shouldn't the tax get lower in subsequent years? Seems that the page never got updated, and therefore no reminder.
Now I need to find out who is in charge of this department.

(28,994 posts)(I don't think I asked for an online reminder - I haven't gotten one of those either).
My car is a 2023 & I don't expect there will be much of a change from last year. I think with new cars it drops very slowly, if at all, the first few years.

(50,905 posts)And, apparently, two years ago the legislators raised the tax. Of course.. Meaning they cannot actually raise it but they keep it the same. Next year will be lower.
My suggestion for you is to go online and pay.

(28,994 posts)But the mail delivery in my area is so screwy I don't trust it for something like this. Two years ago I not only received my tags but ones for someone who lived two blocks up the street (I delivered those).
I'll either go to an office for them or use the vending machine at Cub.

(28,994 posts)When I had to switch the title on my old car to my nephew, we were in and out in about 20 minutes. (My newphew being a good guy, not always efficient, so I wanted to be sure that title got changed.)
Not all Cubs have the kiosks and you do pay a "convenience fee" for using a card, but it's so fast I think it's worth it.

by mail, in person, whatever. The DMV is charged with the credit card fee, and they apparently have to pass that along by legislative requirement so that we don't effectively have non-card payers subsidizing card-payers.
I did it online at drive.mn.gov and specified my checking account and paid no fee.

(50,905 posts)Will remember this for next year. The charge at the kiosk is $4.95 and an additional fee for credit but not debit card.
