Mahmood requests recount after 6-vote loss in Hamtramck mayoral election

Hamtramck City Councilman Muhith Mahmood will challenge the results of the city's mayoral election after Wayne County officials certified his six-vote loss earlier this week.

His attorney Mark Brewer said, pending approval by the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, staff from the Wayne County Clerk's Office will recount all ballots cast in the election by hand.

Final results certified by the board on Tuesday gave the win to Adam Alharbi with 2,066 total votes (44.6%) against 2,060 for Mahmood (44.4%). Write-in candidate Lynn Blasey received 504 total votes (10.8%).

"I think the race is close enough that the margin could change," Brewer said. "Voting machines are generally pretty accurate but they do miss things occassionally."
