Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson pushes back against GOP subpoena requesting election materials
LANSING, Mich. A legal battle over state election materials in Michigan continues as Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson responds to a Republican-backed subpoena requesting the release of additional documents by the Michigan Department of State (MDOS).
Benson's response to the subpoena asserts that she and MDOS have provided hundreds of documents of unredacted training materials and dozens of videos in compliance with the order. The response goes on to claim the Benson and MDOS have legal standing in their objection to providing election materials containing sensitive personal information.
Benson is also in the middle of a lawsuit with the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) over access to the state's unredacted Qualified Voter File (QVF) the list of all registered voters in the state, along with their personal information like Social Security Numbers.
In April, the Michigan House Oversight Committee approved the subpoena requesting a slew of election training materials from MDOS and Benson with a deadline of May 22. Among those materials requested was an unredacted QVF, along with computer technology, procedures and voting equipment information related to securing ballots and preventing tampering. The subpoena also requested documents from a secure portal of election training materials, known as the eLearning Center portal, that local clerks can request access to.
