More than two dozen parents have voiced their opposition to a new student group created at Royal Oak High School after some students also held a rally against the organization.
A Turning Point USA student club held its first meeting on Nov. 10, and parents came to the Royal Oak school board's Thursday night meeting to demand that the district take action and ban the chapter from further activities.
Turning Point was founded in 2012 by conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during a rally at a Utah college in September. According to the organizations website, over 1,000 high schools nationwide have Turning Point clubs or chapters.
The clubs promote freedom loving, American values and students champion these initiatives by organizing into student led chapters and activism hubs," according to the site.

(112,176 posts)and extremist RW hatred. I don't give a damn if they have an eternal martyr in Kirk (and of course, his murder was abhorrent), but there is a limit to free speech if it crosses into extolling violence against others and hate-based activities towards others. High schools have enough discrimination among individuals and groups from the ever-present cliques. This will be a fight, no doubt, but I don't blame these parents.

(8,428 posts)ROTC into high schools. I remember some schools were enthusiastic and had kids marching around in uniforms. Some schools were lukewarm and kids could join but not have a physical ROTC presence at the school. We had a couple of "military academies" aka "send your sons for someone else to deal with" that were nearby also. They used to "recruit" with pictures of kids in uniforms marching around with fake guns and blunt swords. Some parents from my school raised hell at a school board meeting when the "guidance counselor" had the local Army recruiter in his office and called in various seniors a few months before graduation.
That might not be much of a big deal if it happened now but during the height of Vietnam it was a line that many parents would not allow to be crossed.
