Adam Alharbi wins Hamtramck mayoral race by 6 votes after election certified

Two weeks and multiple controversies after Election Day, Adam Alharbi is the winner of the race for Hamtramck mayor, defeating Muhith Mahmood by just six votes, according to results certified on Tuesday, Nov. 18, by the Wayne County Board of Canvassers.

Unofficial results released by the Wayne County Clerk's Office on election night showed Alharbi with 2,009 votes and Mahmood with 1,998, an 11-vote margin.

After polls closed, 37 ballots were found in the office of Hamtramck Clerk Rana Faraj, according to testimony she gave before the Board of Canvassers on Thursday, Nov. 13. On Nov. 14, the board was deadlocked along party lines — Republicans voting to block the ballots, Democrats voting against blocking the ballots — which prevented the ballots from being included.

The board voted to include 120 uncured absentee ballots in the totals. Those were counted last week and were added to the unofficial totals from election night.
