Former Congressman Andy Levin endorses El-Sayed's U.S. Senate bid in joint op-ed

The progressive candidate on the Democratic Party side of the U.S. Senate race gained a powerful ally in former Congressman Andy Levin, a stalwart labor union supporter.

Levin’s endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed, who is seeking the Democratic nomination in the contest to replace retiring U.S. Sen Gary Peters of Bloomfield, came on Tuesday after the pair jointly authored an op-ed in The Detroit News published on Monday. The opinion piece focused on the party’s need to rally around workers to be successful in the 2026 election.

The former congressman represented Michigan’s 9th district in the U.S. House of Representatives, covering Oakland and Macomb counties, between 2019 and 2023. His career in Congress ended when Haley Stevens defeated him in the Democratic primary in 2022 following redistricting.

Stevens, of Birmingham, is one of three Democrats also seeking the nomination, along with state Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak.

I like seeing news of the races that effect me. But, from what I have heard from these candidates I still think McMortow best represents my interests.
