MI-SOS: Oakland County businesswoman (R) to run for secretary of state
Lansing Monica Yatooma, an Oakland County businesswoman and 2024 Republican National Convention delegate, announced Wednesday she'll seek the GOP nomination for secretary of state next year.
Yatooma, 38, of Commerce Township has built connections within the Michigan Republican Party and has experience in grassroots advocacy, previously co-founding a nonprofit called the Great Education Initiative that works to strengthen parents' rights and local control within the school system. She also owns a hazardous waste removal company called Metro Detroit Medical Waste.
In an interview on Wednesday, Yatooma said she got involved in politics after the 2020 presidential election, which Republican Donald Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden.
"I went to bed thinking that I was going to wake up with Trump being president, and that wasn't the case," Yatooma said. "I called my state rep, and I said I want to understand how all of this works."
